About the Food Safety Supervisor Certificate

Under the NSW Food Act 2003 and the Food Regulation 2015, all food businesses in NSW that handle potentially hazardous food must have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor. The FSS must be on site or reasonably available whenever food is being prepared, served, or stored.

SITXFSA006 Participate in Safe Food Handling Practices is the nationally recognised unit of competency required for Food Safety Supervisor certification in NSW. The course covers food safety hazards, temperature control, cleaning and sanitising, personal hygiene, and food safety program management.

Non-compliance carries serious penalties. NSW Food Authority inspectors can issue improvement notices, penalty infringement notices, or prosecution for food businesses operating without a certified Food Safety Supervisor. The certificate is valid for 5 years and must be renewed before it expires.
