What Is a Graduate Diploma? The Australian Guide

Graduate Diplomas sit at the top of the Australian VET qualification ladder — AQF Level 8, the same level as a Bachelor Honours degree. For experienced professionals who want a postgraduate-equivalent qualification without the cost or time of a university Master's program, they represent a compelling option. Here's what you need to know.

What is a Graduate Diploma?

A Graduate Diploma is an AQF Level 8 qualification delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). It is the highest level within the VET (Vocational Education and Training) system. At Level 8, a Graduate Diploma is equivalent to a Bachelor Honours degree on the AQF — above a standard Bachelor's degree (Level 7) and below a Master's degree (Level 9). Graduate Diplomas are for people who already hold a qualification at Diploma or Advanced Diploma level and want to develop advanced strategic and leadership capability.

How does a Graduate Diploma compare to a Master's degree?

Both are Level 8 on the AQF. A Master's degree is typically 2 years full-time at a university, costs $30,000–$60,000+, and requires a bachelor's degree for entry. A Graduate Diploma through a VET provider typically takes 12–18 months, costs $5,000–$15,000, and requires a Diploma or Advanced Diploma plus relevant work experience. The content focus differs: university Master's programs lean toward research and theory; VET Graduate Diplomas develop applied strategic skills grounded in workplace practice.

Who should consider a Graduate Diploma?

Graduate Diplomas are well-suited to: senior managers and executives wanting formal recognition of their strategic skills; people who hold an Advanced Diploma and want to progress to the next qualification level; professionals who want postgraduate-level credentials without a 2-year Master's program; and those who may not qualify for a Master's degree entry (which requires a bachelor's degree) but do hold Advanced Diploma-level qualifications and significant experience.

Graduate Diplomas available in Australia

The most sought-after Graduate Diplomas in the BSB training package include: the Graduate Diploma of Strategic Leadership (BSB80320), which develops executive leadership and organisational strategy capability; the Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) (BSB80120), which combines senior management with learning and development strategy; and the Graduate Diploma of Portfolio Management (BSB80220), which covers portfolio and program governance at an enterprise level.

Entry requirements

Most Graduate Diploma programs require: an Advanced Diploma or higher VET qualification (AQF Level 6+), OR a Bachelor's degree or higher; AND at least 5 years of relevant work experience, including time in senior or management roles. RTOs may also look for evidence that you are currently working in, or have recently worked in, a senior position. Requirements vary by provider — it is worth speaking to an RTO about your specific background.

RPL at Graduate Diploma level

RPL is available for Graduate Diplomas and is particularly appropriate at this level — most candidates are experienced executives who have been operating at this level of complexity for years without a formal credential. Evidence typically focuses on strategic decisions you've made, programs you've led, and the organisational outcomes you've driven. An RPL assessor will work with you to map your experience against the qualification's competency standards.

Are Graduate Diplomas recognised by employers?

Recognition varies by sector and role. In government, corporate, and education sectors, Graduate Diplomas are increasingly well understood and valued. In organisations that default to university qualifications, you may need to explain the AQF Level 8 equivalence. That said, for senior leadership and executive development contexts, what employers care about most is your track record, your strategic thinking, and your credibility — the Graduate Diploma provides formal recognition of capability that experienced people already demonstrate.
