What Is RPL? The Complete Australian Guide to Recognition of Prior Learning

If you've spent years doing a job, managing a team, or working in a specialised field — you may already have the skills to qualify for a formal qualification without doing a full study program. That's what RPL is for.

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process where a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) evaluates your existing knowledge, skills, and experience against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. If your evidence demonstrates sufficient competency, you receive the qualification — or partial credit toward it — without completing the standard coursework.

How is RPL different from a standard enrolment?

In a standard enrolment, you study the course material, complete assessments, and demonstrate competency through that study process. In RPL, you start from your existing experience and work backward — gathering evidence that your current skills already meet the qualification standards. You're being assessed on what you already know and can do, not on what you're learning.

Who is RPL suitable for?

RPL is well-suited to people who: have 3–5+ years of relevant work experience; have been doing a management, safety, HR, or specialist role without a formal qualification; have overseas qualifications not recognised in Australia; or have completed training throughout their career that was never formally assessed. It's most common at Diploma and Advanced Diploma level.

What evidence do you need?

Evidence for RPL varies by qualification and RTO, but typically includes: resume and employment history; samples of work (reports, plans, documents, emails); references or workplace attestations from supervisors; position descriptions; and a competency conversation with an assessor. Some RTOs use a structured portfolio kit; others conduct interviews. Your RTO will guide you through exactly what's required.

How long does RPL take?

RPL is significantly faster than full study — typically 6–12 weeks for a Diploma, compared to 12–18 months of standard study. The timeline depends on how quickly you can gather evidence and how responsive your RTO is. It is not instant: there is a real assessment process, and a rigorous RTO will not grant a qualification without adequate evidence.

How much does RPL cost?

RPL typically costs less than full study — usually $1,500–$4,000 for a Diploma, compared to $2,500–$8,000 for full enrolment. Some RTOs offer fixed RPL packages; others charge based on the units being assessed. The price reflects the assessment work, not the study materials you're not using.

Is the qualification the same as through full study?

Yes. A qualification awarded through RPL is exactly the same as one completed through full study. The certificate does not say "RPL" on it — it states the same qualification code and title. It is nationally recognised, sits on the Australian Qualifications Register, and carries the same weight with employers.
