RPL for Managers and Team Leaders

If you have been managing people, budgets, or projects for several years without a formal qualification, your experience may already meet the standard for a Diploma or Advanced Diploma. Here is what you need to know.

Managers and team leaders are among the most common candidates for RPL — and often the best placed. The skills required for a Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420) — managing teams, making operational decisions, planning and prioritising work, managing performance — are precisely what working managers do every day. The gap is usually documentation, not capability.

Which qualifications are available via RPL for managers?

What evidence do managers typically have?

Most managers accumulate significant evidence over the course of a career without realising it. Common evidence sources include:

  • Performance reviews and KPI records showing your management responsibilities and outcomes
  • Team plans, operational plans, or business plans you have developed or contributed to
  • Meeting agendas and minutes from team meetings, project meetings, or leadership forums you led
  • Performance management records — PIPs, structured feedback conversations, onboarding documentation
  • Budget records, purchase approvals, or financial reports you were responsible for
  • Emails, reports, or correspondence demonstrating stakeholder management and decision-making
  • Position descriptions from current and previous roles

You do not need to have been a senior executive. Team leaders, supervisors, coordinators, and operational managers — at any level — can hold RPL-eligible experience for Certificate IV or Diploma-level qualifications.

Diploma vs Advanced Diploma — which level are you?

The Diploma of Leadership and Management (AQF Level 5) is designed for people managing teams and day-to-day operations. The Advanced Diploma (AQF Level 6) is designed for those with strategic management responsibilities — making decisions that affect the direction of the organisation, not just day-to-day execution.

If you manage a team but your decisions are largely operational and within an established framework set by others, the Diploma is the appropriate level. If you set strategy, manage other managers, or hold P&L responsibility, the Advanced Diploma or Graduate Diploma may reflect your actual level of responsibility.

How long does RPL take for a management qualification?

Most managers complete RPL for a Diploma in 6–10 weeks. The evidence-gathering stage is typically straightforward — management roles generate documentation naturally — but it requires you to organise materials you may not have kept in one place. The most common delay is locating older documents from previous employers.

What if I manage people but my role title isn't "Manager"?

Role titles are largely irrelevant to RPL eligibility. What matters is what you actually do. If you lead a team, coordinate work, manage performance, make operational decisions, and are accountable for outcomes — that is management work, regardless of whether your title says "Manager", "Coordinator", "Supervisor", "Lead", or "Senior [role]".
