The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) sets out clear levels for vocational qualifications — but the practical differences between Certificate IV, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma aren't always obvious. Here's what each level actually means for your career, explained without jargon.
Certificate IV — AQF Level 4: Supervisory capability
A Certificate IV develops the skills to work independently, coordinate tasks, and provide guidance to others in a team. It's the right entry point if you're moving from a technical or operational role into a team leader or coordinator position. Certificate IVs typically take 6–12 months online. Examples: Certificate IV in Leadership and Management (BSB40520), Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41419).
Diploma — AQF Level 5: Management capability
A Diploma builds the capability to lead teams, manage budgets, drive operational outcomes, and make sound business decisions. It's the most common qualification for people consolidating a management role. Diplomas take 12 months online and are by far the most popular tier in the BSB training package. Examples: Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420), Diploma of Project Management (BSB50820).
Advanced Diploma — AQF Level 6: Senior management capability
An Advanced Diploma develops strategic and senior management capability. It's for people already in management who want to qualify for General Manager, Director, or head-of-function roles. Advanced Diplomas take 12–18 months and are less common than Diplomas — which means employers treat them as a genuine differentiator. Examples: Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB60420), Advanced Diploma of Business (BSB60120).
The fastest way to choose the right level
Search job advertisements for the roles you want to move into over the next 2–3 years. Look at what qualifications they list as required or preferred. Most management roles (Team Leader, Operations Manager, WHS Manager, HR Manager) ask for a Diploma. Senior strategic roles (General Manager, Head of Safety, Director) ask for Advanced Diploma or degree. Entry coordinator roles ask for Certificate IV.
There's no mandatory sequencing in Australian VET. You don't have to complete a Certificate IV before doing a Diploma. If your experience level matches the Diploma, enrol directly. RPL also removes barriers — an RTO may assess your experience and find you're ready for a higher level than you'd assumed.
Can you skip levels?
Yes. You can enrol directly in a Diploma without completing a Certificate IV first, and move directly from a Diploma to an Advanced Diploma. The entry requirement for most VET qualifications is experience and suitability for the level — not completion of the previous level. Talk to your RTO about your background and they'll advise which level is the right fit.
