What Jobs Can You Get with a Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420)?

The BSB50420 is one of Australia's most held management qualifications — and it qualifies you for a wide range of team leader, manager, and operations roles across every industry. Here's what's actually available.

The Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420) is one of the most widely held vocational qualifications in Australia. It appears on job advertisements across construction, healthcare, retail, government, financial services, and corporate business. But what specifically does it qualify you for — and what salary can you expect?

Who is this qualification for?

BSB50420 is designed for people who are in — or moving toward — a team leader or manager role. It develops the operational skills to lead a team, manage performance, make sound business decisions, and plan and monitor work outcomes. It is used both by people studying toward management and by experienced managers completing the qualification to formalise their existing skills.

Job titles the BSB50420 leads to

  • Team Leader / Senior Team Leader
  • Operations Coordinator / Manager
  • Department Supervisor
  • Business Unit Manager
  • Frontline Manager
  • Site Manager (non-construction)
  • Branch Manager (retail, financial services)
  • Service Delivery Manager
  • Customer Operations Manager

These roles exist across virtually every industry — from aged care and healthcare to construction, banking, government, logistics, and retail. The BSB50420 is industry-neutral by design.

Salary expectations

RoleTypical Salary Range
Team Leader$65,000–$90,000
Operations Coordinator$70,000–$95,000
Department Manager$80,000–$115,000
Branch / Site Manager$85,000–$120,000
Business Unit Manager$90,000–$130,000

Salaries vary significantly by industry, location, and organisation size. Mining, construction, and government roles typically pay above these ranges; retail and hospitality typically pay below.

What does the qualification actually teach?

BSB50420 covers six broad capability areas: leading people (managing performance, providing feedback, supporting development), operational planning, business communication and professional relationships, risk management, WHS responsibilities at a management level, and critical thinking. It is deliberately broad — which is why it's valued across industries.

What comes after BSB50420?

The natural progression from the Diploma of Leadership and Management is the Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB60420) — which develops senior management and strategic capability and targets General Manager and Director-level roles. Some graduates also complete a Dual Diploma (combining BSB50420 with the Diploma of Project Management or HR Management) to broaden their credentials.

If you're already working as a manager or team leader, RPL may allow you to earn the BSB50420 in 6–8 weeks by demonstrating your existing skills — rather than completing 12 months of study.
