RSA Course NSW: Who Needs It, How to Get It, and What It Costs

If you work anywhere that serves or sells alcohol in NSW, you need an RSA. The good news: you can do it online. Here's everything you need to know.

NextCert Editorial · Published 5 April 2026

RSA stands for Responsible Service of Alcohol. In NSW, it's a legal requirement for anyone who sells, serves, or supplies alcohol as part of their job. That includes bartenders, wait staff, bottle shop workers, and even security staff at licensed venues.

Who Needs an RSA in NSW?

  • Bartenders and bar staff at pubs, clubs, and bars
  • Wait staff who serve alcohol in restaurants
  • Bottle shop and liquor store employees
  • Hotel front-of-house staff involved in alcohol service
  • Function and event staff serving alcohol
  • Licensees and managers of licensed premises
  • Security personnel working at licensed venues

If alcohol is part of your job in NSW, you need an RSA — no exceptions. Employers can be fined for allowing staff to serve alcohol without one.

Can I Do the RSA Online in NSW?

Yes. NSW is one of the states that accepts online RSA training. You can complete the SITXFSA005 course entirely from home on your computer or phone. The course typically takes 4 to 6 hours, depending on the provider. This makes RSA one of the most accessible compliance certificates — you can often get it done the day before you start a new job.

How Much Does an RSA Cost?

RSA courses in NSW typically cost between $30 and $80. Online courses tend to be cheaper than face-to-face options. The price usually includes the RSA competency card application to Liquor & Gaming NSW.

How Long Does an RSA Last in NSW?

An RSA competency card in NSW is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. You must complete a new course and get a new card before your current one expires. If your RSA lapses, you cannot legally serve alcohol until you have a valid card.

How Do I Get My RSA Competency Card?

After completing the course, the RTO submits your completion to Liquor & Gaming NSW. Your interim certificate is available immediately (digital format), and the official NSW RSA competency card is typically issued within a few business days. You can usually show your interim certificate to your employer while waiting for the official card.
