A dual diploma sounds almost too good to be true — two qualifications, one program, less time and money. But it's a genuine feature of the Australian VET system, and it's used by thousands of students each year who want to maximise their credential value without doubling their study commitment.
How dual diploma packaging works
The Australian Qualifications Framework allows RTOs to package two qualifications together where they share common units of competency. In a dual diploma, you complete the units required for both qualifications — but where units overlap, you only complete them once. You emerge with two separate nationally recognised certificates, typically in 12–15 months rather than the 24 months it would take to complete both separately.
The most popular dual diploma combinations
- Diploma of Business + Diploma of Leadership & Management (BSB50120 + BSB50420) — the most popular combination in Australia; ideal for managers wanting broad credentials
- Diploma of Leadership & Management + Diploma of HR Management (BSB50420 + BSB50320) — for people managers stepping into HR leadership
- Diploma of Project Management + Diploma of Leadership & Management (BSB50820 + BSB50420) — for project professionals who also lead teams
- Diploma of Project Management + Diploma of WHS (BSB50820 + BSB51319) — high demand in construction and infrastructure
- Diploma of Leadership & Management + Diploma of WHS (BSB50420 + BSB51319) — for safety-focused managers
How much do you save?
Studying two Diplomas separately might cost $4,000–$16,000 total. A dual diploma for the same two qualifications typically costs $3,000–$10,000 — a saving of 20–40% depending on the provider and combination. The time saving is also significant: 12–15 months for a dual diploma versus 18–24 months studying both separately.
Both qualifications in a dual diploma are fully accredited and issued as separate certificates. Neither certificate says "dual" on it — they look identical to qualifications completed individually, and carry the same weight with employers.
Who should consider a dual diploma?
A dual diploma makes most sense if: you have a clear career pathway that benefits from two complementary credentials; you want to maximise credential value from a single period of study; or you're moving into a role that requires both management and specialist knowledge (e.g. a WHS manager who also leads a team). It's less suitable if your career direction is narrow and a single diploma clearly suffices.
What about RPL for a dual diploma?
RPL is available for dual diploma packages, but requires evidence across both qualifications' competency sets. Because many units are shared, evidence gathering is not twice the work — but you do need to demonstrate competency across the full breadth of both qualifications. For experienced managers who sit at the intersection of two disciplines, dual diploma RPL can be highly efficient.
