White Card NSW: Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

The white card is your entry pass to any construction site in Australia. This guide covers everything NSW workers need to know — from booking the course to receiving the physical card.

NextCert Editorial · Published 1 April 2026

If you're starting work in the construction industry in NSW, a white card is the first thing you need. Officially known as the General Construction Induction Card, it proves you've completed the CPCCWHS1001 unit and understand basic workplace health and safety on construction sites.

What Is a White Card?

The white card is a nationally recognised credential that allows you to enter and work on construction sites across Australia. It covers WHS legislation, hazard identification, risk management, and safe work practices specific to construction environments.

Everyone — from labourers and apprentices to engineers, architects, and delivery drivers — needs a white card before they set foot on an active construction site. It's not just for tradespeople.

How Do I Get a White Card in NSW?

  • Complete the CPCCWHS1001 course with a registered training organisation (RTO)
  • The course takes approximately 6 hours face to face — typically a one-day session
  • You receive a Statement of Attainment on the training day
  • The RTO submits your completion to SafeWork NSW
  • SafeWork NSW posts your physical white card to you — typically within 10 business days

Since 2018, SafeWork NSW no longer accepts online-only white card courses for NSW workers. You must complete the training face to face.

How Much Does a White Card Course Cost?

White card courses in NSW typically cost between $80 and $120 per person. Prices vary by provider and location. Group bookings for construction companies may attract a lower per-person rate.

Does the White Card Expire?

No. A white card does not expire and is valid for life, unless it is formally revoked by a regulator. It is also recognised across all Australian states and territories — you do not need a separate card for each state.

What ID Do I Need on the Day?

You need to bring valid photo ID to the training session. A driver's licence, passport, or proof-of-age card are all accepted. You also need a Unique Student Identifier (USI), which is free to create online at usi.gov.au if you don't already have one.
